An Analysis of the Relationship between Family Caregiving Burden and Family Functioning in Korea
Ahn Yang-Heui

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between family caregiving burden and family functioning. The conceptual rationale for this study was the model developed by W. Poulshock and D. Deimling¡¯s(1984) which explains caregiving burden as having three parts: antecedents, burdens and consequences. From the conceptual framework of this study the antecedent variable was identified as the caregiver¡¯s perception of the elder¡¯s symptoms of cognitive and physical impairment, the independent variable, caregiver¡¯s perceptions of caregiving burden and the dependent variable, family functioning.

A descriptive-correlational research design was employed in this study. A total of 50 Korean caregivers caring for elders 5 years of age or older who had chronic illness and were admitted to one oriental general hospital were recruited for participation. This population was used because patients at this oriental general hospital almost always have a family caregiver with them at the hospital. The research instruments used were the following three self-report research tools: the revised Burden Scale developed by W. Poulshock and D. Deimling, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale ¥² developed vy D. Olson et al. and a Demographic Date Sheet. Three major findings arose in this study. The first finding was that ekder¡¯s disruptive behavior burden and social functioning burden had a negative impact in the relationships among elders, caregivers, and families. The second finding was that there was a significant relationship between the disruptive behavior burden and family cohesion. The third finding was that there was a significant relationship between elder¡¯s activity of daily living impairment as the antecedent variable and family adaptability.

These findings indicated that the family caregiving burden was correlated with the family functioning. The findings of this study will be used to develop family nursing interventions designed to decrease the burden perception by caregivers. Furthermore the data in this study will be used to construct the family caregiving burden model in Korea.
